The Smokestack Dilema

For some reason there is a small debate in town about whether Domtar’s smokestack should come down. Some people want to see it stay and to “build around it” - to leave it as a relic of some sorts.

To quote Seth Myers from SNL … “Really? I mean Really?” Forgive me if I don’t understand why anyone would want to keep that up. It is beyond me. The smokestack should have been the first thing to come down and the entire city should have come out to watch it. I’d even suggest a liquor license for a second street west party.

This land is going to be rebuilt in the next 10 to 15 years. The bridge is coming down and that entire area of town will see some very much needed development. Keeping the smokestack would make that entire area look gloomy.

People in town always talk about the image Cornwall has from the 401. The first thing most people see is a big smokestack. Their first impression is always to hold their breath - even if there is no smell in town anymore.

Wouldn’t it be nice to start rebranding the city with a huge demolition of the giant smokestack that was Cornwall’s past? People on the highway would at least stop holding their breath.

I second the street party idea! Keeping the smokestack would be ridiculous!

I agree - it should come down.

I have relatives who live in Alberta - and they came down in June. They said they were happy they didn’t have to hold their nose anymore!

My sister goes to Potsdam University - so I frequently travel the bridge. I always look down at the land and am so excited for the new developments that will be happening. It looks awful now - and looks bad for Cornwall’s image.

I’m not exactly sure why people want to build around the smokestack. Instead take a picture to remember it like we do with everything else….

The Past is the Past. Let’s focus on the future.

Take the Smokestacks Down. Come om we are not talking about some 100 year old historical building. These Smokestakcks will serve no other purpose but to be an eye sore.

We should do more than take them down, we should do everything we can to promote that we are taking them down. Send a press release to everyone who will read it and get the media involved. Let’s tell the world that Cornwall doesn’t stink anymore and put a positive media spin on it. Maybe there is some kind of guiness book or world records thing we could do. I know, the biggest object ever pulled down without the help of a mechanical device. We’ll tie a big rope to it and get like 20,000 people to pull it down by hand, wouldn’t that be something :)

You know what, this is so “Cornwall” not thinkins steight. We are celebrating lost job. Cornwall steel stinks from the aluminium factory across the river. We should remaind sad when the mill close that eans inconemy went to hell. Good pay9ing jobs for the unfortunit in Cornwall is 10.00/hr big deal. So for the once that think that by Domtar closing it’s doors was the best thing ever happen to Cornwall, The should really consider given there head a shake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
